The Effect of Health Measures on Healthy Life Expectancy Estimates for Middle-Aged and Older Koreans
Woo Hae-Bong

Abstract
Healthy life expectancy has received growing attention due to the importance of the quality of life as well as the length of life in the Korean society. However, previous studies have used different measures of health in estimating healthy life expectancy, which causes some difficulties in comparing and interpreting healthy life expectancy estimates. Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS), this study examines the effect of health measures on healthy life expectancy. For health measures, this study examines activities of daily living(ADL), instrumental activities of daily living(IADL), physical performance(NAGI), and self-rated health(SRH). The data show some hierarchical relationship in healthy life expectancy estimates by health measures. However, this study also finds that different classifications of healthy and unhealthy states could result in substantial differences in healthy life expectancy. This study suggests that researchers should carefully select health measures that are relevant for their research purposes. Further, some caution should be exercised in defining health(disability) status, given that different classifications could result in substantially different estimates in healthy life expectancy.
